The modern or contemporary kilt

Utilikilt Mocker with inside pockets

Could you imagine a product market with absolutely no product development?
Of course you couldn't. How should our cars look like had there been no new models or re-launches during, say, the last 50 years? (Have a look on Cuba).
The kilt market might come close to, due to traditionalists who are against any new thinking with regard to the kilt.
Well, we better not exaggerate; after all we have got the semi-traditional casual tartan kilt and perhaps even more important, the modern kilt.

The modern kilt or the contemporary kilt has been referred to a couple of times and it is an evolution of the traditional kilt, meaning it could look rather much the same but also be quite different.
It is typically very casual, like blue jeans.

The best known modern kilt is probably the Utilikilt, invented around year 2000 by an American, Steve Villegas who is running his business from Seattle, USA.

The Utilikilt comes  in various colours and models.

Today around 20 enterprises, most of them American and Canadian, market various brands and types of modern kilts.

The Utilikilt Original has  cargo pockets

Unlike traditional kilts modern kilts require no accessories - they have pockets - and typically they go into the washing machine.
Often a modern kilt is worn with boots or heavy shoes. Despite no tartans the modern kilt has become extremely popular with Scottish descendants in the US. In future modern kilts could very well become the choice of non-Scots, being even more versatile (pockets and handling) and all the time undergoing improvements (product development).

Even if the Utilikilt looks quite different to a traditional kilt it is most masculine by design.
The price is 187,50 US Dollars (Original and Mocker) plus shipping, taxes and local VAT.
To an EU-resident that amounts to a price about 25 % above that of a pair of Hugo Boss jeans.
Not the cheapest kilt in the world but craftsmanship and durability are excellent.

Should you consider wearing a contemporary kilt for functions where a more formal look is asked for; maybe you should take a look at 21st Century Kilts.
